چکیده

background and aim: respiratory distress syndrome (rds) is a lung disorder, which can damage the auditory brainstem pathways because of hypoxia. the aim of this study was to evaluate brainstem auditory electrophysiology changes of neonates with rds. methods: fifteen term neonates who suffered from rds, 15 term neonates admitted in the nicu for any reason except rds, and 15 normal term neonates as control group were studied from june to november 2014. auditory brainstem response (abr) was recorded by clicks, delivered at 80 dbnhl, the polarity was alternative, the band pass filter and the time window were 50-2000 hz and 15ms with total 2000 sweeps, respectively. data were analyzed by anova and paired t-test using ssps18. results: the absolute latencies of waves i, iii, v and i-iii, i-v intervals of both ear in rds group and the participants admitted in nicu were significantly longer than controls (p=0.00). conclusion: hypoxia and asphyxia due to rds can damage the auditory brainstem pathways in neonatal period; additionally, the neonates who were admitted in nicu are also at the risk of auditory brainstem deficit. the findings shed light on the importance of assessing the auditory brainstem function in neonates who had rds and who were admitted in nicu.

Predictive Factors of Acute Renal Failure in the Neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Background: Preterm birth occurs in a large number of pregnancies, and its incidence has been reported to be on the rise. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in the premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The present study aimed to determine the predictive factors, clinical courses, and outcomes of AKI in the neonates with the clinical and radiological manifes...

Comparison of Nasal Non-invasive Ventilation Methods in Preterm Neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Background: Humidified heated high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP), and nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) are three nasal non-invasive ventilation methods. The purpose of this study was to compare these three methods in decreasing intubation and mechanical ventilation rate in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrom...

Evaluation of Serum NT-Pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Neonates with Respiratory Distress

Background Respiratory Distress (RD) is a life-threatening respiratory failure. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) in distinguishing respiratory and heart diseases in neonates. Materials and Methods Hundred fifty neonates aged 2-3 days randomly collected from those who hospitalized in the related ward of the Ali ...

Effects of Hyperbilirubinemia on Auditory Brainstem Response of Neonates Treated with Phototherapy

Introduction: One of the most common pathologies in neonates is hyperbilirubinemia, which is a good marker for damage to the central nervous system. The sensitivity of the auditory system to bilirubin has been previously documented, with much discrepancy in its effects on Auditory Brainstem Response results. Thus the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hyperbilirubinemia on ...

Surfactant function in neonates with respiratory distress syndrome.

The function of pulmonary surfactant of a group of 14 preterm neonates (birth weight 907 +/- 60 g) who suffered from severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and who had received exogenous bovine lipid extracted surfactant on the first day of life was compared to that in a second group of 8 neonates (birth weight 940 +/- 110 g) with mild RDS who had not received surfactant treatment. Mechanic...

Neutrophil functions in late preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome

INTRODUCTION The innate immune system is the first line of host defense against invading microorganisms. In order to achieve this, neutrophils must be able both to circulate freely in the blood and to migrate as adherent cells into the extravascular tissues to phagocytose and kill invading microorganisms effectively. Most studies of neutrophil function have been conducted under conditions of am...
